About Author: CEO of 11D Networks LLC, makers of the 3D Socket package.
The following was a response we gave to a requested comparison of 3D Socket and Ning in an Affiliate Forum:
Thanks for the question!
The key differences are flexibility, control and price. Let's deal with price first:
3D Socket is a one-time fee of $299.99 that lets you build several
networks. Let's say you want to build 3 different content themed sites.
With 3D Socket you paid $299.99. Each one can be on their own domain
and you can host it yourself or with us (part of the control and
flexibility). Seeing as how you probably want to make money from your
efforts you don't want any references to 3D Socket or have advertising
controlled by someone else. This is inherent in the 3D Socket package.
For the same thing with Ning you will need to pay the following
for each site: $24.95/m to remove Ning promotion links, $24.95/m
to control your own advertising, and $4.95/m for having your own
domain. That's $54.85 PER MONTH to have one site and $164.55 PER
MONTH to have 3 sites. After the first year you have paid over
$1,900.00, and you are still paying.
Then lets talk about control. It's your site(s) to do with as you
which, no big brother to moderate the way you operate what you have
paid for. Recently Ning kicked off hundreds of paying customers on
short notice because they didn't agree with the content on their site,
this after taking their money for years.
The flexibility of having access to the source code is also a
significant plus if you want to be able to modify or add to the package
to suit your needs. It's also flexible in that you can port it from one
hosting platform to another seamlessly so you are never locked in to
one solution.
In short, it's total freedom and control of your site(s) and flexibility, all at a great price!
